In one of its largest safety actions this year, Ford Motor Company has issued a recall affecting approximately 1.4 million vehicles across several popular models due to a potentially dangerous defect that could increase the risk of crashes and injuries. The recall, was announced in coordination with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), highlights a critical safety concern that drivers and owners should not ignore.

Understanding the defect and the risk it poses to the driver.

The recall centers on a flaw in the rearview cameras, as they may fail to display a clear image, creating safety risks that may increase the risk of collision.  The fault originates in a defective camera unit and has been known to fail unexpectedly. When this occurs, drivers have reported everything from minor display issues to a complete display failure.

This defect affects many of the Ford Company’s most popular models made between the years of 2015 and 2020, such as:

However, the problem does not just affect Ford vehicles; it also affects Ford’s luxury division, Lincoln. Affected Lincoln vehicles include:

  • Lincoln MKT
  • Lincoln MKZ

Why This Recall Is Important

The loss of rearview display may seem like a minor inconvenience at first glance, but it poses a serious safety hazard. Sudden rearview car display issues and failure have been known to catch drivers off guard, especially in high-traffic areas or during adverse weather conditions. The NHTSA classifies this defect as a “safety-related defect” under federal motor vehicle safety standards, emphasizing the urgency of corrective action.

Even a momentary loss of rearview display while backing up the vehicle can lead to a crash. Owners of affected vehicles are going to be notified via mail as early as October of this year (2025).

Once you are able to schedule the vehicle to be inspected by your local Ford dealer, the repair should take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour. The repair involves inspection of the reviewview camera and electronic components as well as the replacement of any defective system components.

How to Check If Your Vehicle Is Affected
